7 Steps to get Your Project Back on Track

When a project starts going off the rails, it's hard to know where to start.

I've turned around a number of 'drifting' projects throughout my career and there are practical steps you can take to get your project back on track.

It's easy to default to more meetings, more reports, more noise.

But this doesn't fix the problem.

And honestly, most projects fail because of a lack of clarity and alignment, because people can't answer these questions:

❗What does success look like? Not deliverables, actual success

❗Who's accountable when things go wrong. Is there one clear owner?

❗How does this connect to our bigger strategy? And does it still align.

❗Why does this project matter? Who does it benefit and how.

Lack of alignment shows up as:

❗Leadership saying different things to different people

❗Teams with competing priorities that all feel urgent

❗Teams working hard on work that doesn't matter

❗Politics winning over progress

I've listed 7 practical steps you can take immediately to get your project back on track.

What would you add? What has worked for you?
