The Business Risk of Siloed Project Delivery

I was working at a large company once upon a time, one that was comprised of mulitple OpCos (or brands, if you prefer - a federated model). 



Usual story, growth by acquisition but the companies acquired were never truly merged, from tech integration to people and processes. 



Add to that, they were a global company. And this meant project initiatives and mandates were coming from everywhere - from Group, from EMEA and then in country.



Their industry (like most industries), meant that there were times of the year that project delivery had to be slowed down, or even paused. 



Then layer on politics, silos, ownership conflicts. Add on that brands had different tech stacks, were at different levels of maturity. 



Honestly, it was one hot mess. 



I was a contractor, brought in to deliver some SaaS platforms across the OpCos. 6 months in, I was tearing my hair out as I'm really not someone who likes chaos and it was painful to watch.



So in my spare time(!), I built a portfolio delivery framework and playbook, taking into account their particular industry needs, their limitations, opportunities and risks.



I looked at their different brands to understand what could be aligned and what couldn't.



I worked with OpCo C-Suite throughout, interviewing them, using their industry expertise to help me build out a Portfolio approach that worked for them.



So when I talk about the business risk of siloed delivery, I'm talking from real experience. And I've seen it in so many other places too. Disconnected projects undermine what could be powerful business outcomes, it puts pressure on people already overloaded with change.



And when project teams work in isolation, you get duplicated effort, wasted resources and conflicting priorities.
